How to Verify If Your Pet’s Microchip Is ICAR-Certified

As Bangkok prepares to enforce its Animal Control Ordinance B.E. 2567, set to take effect on January 10, 2026, microchipping pets will no longer be optional it will be required.
While only licensed veterinarians are authorized to implant microchips, pet owners can freely purchase microchips from various suppliers both online and offline.
❓ But how can you be sure the microchip you purchased meets international safety and quality standards?
In this article, AnyVet Microchip walks you through how to identify and verify ICAR-certified microchips, and explains why this matters for pet safety and legal compliance.
What Is ICAR and Why Is It Important?
ICAR stands for the International Committee for Animal Recording, an international organization responsible for:
Setting global identification standards for livestock and pets
Issuing Manufacturer Codes to certified microchip producers
Verifying that each chip follows the ISO 11784/11785 standards, the international protocol for pet microchip technology
✅ If a microchip is ICAR-certified, it automatically complies with ISO 11784/11785.
This means you can trust that:
The chip has a valid 15-digit number
It will be readable by all ISO-compliant scanners worldwide
It’s traceable to a registered manufacturer
Why Microchip Verification Matters
Due to the growing availability of microchips online, not all chips sold in the market are verified or traceable. Using non-certified microchips can lead to:
Problems registering your pet with local authorities (like BMA)
Compatibility issues with scanners
Risks of duplicate or invalid microchip numbers
Inability to trace pet ownership in case of loss
For peace of mind and legal compliance, always verify that your chip is ICAR-approved.
How to Verify a Pet Microchip via the ICAR Database
Follow these simple steps to confirm whether your pet’s microchip is truly ICAR-certified:
✅ Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Go to the official ICAR website: 🔗 icar.org
2. Go to the “Certifications” menu, then select the category “Animal Registration Devices.”

3. Select the subcategory “RFID with ISO11784/11785” to access the product search page.

4. You will arrive at the product search page.
5. Search by Manufacturer Code, which refers to the first 3 digits of the microchip number.
There are two types of manufacturer codes:
Shared Code: A code used by multiple manufacturers.
Example: 900Non-shared Code: A code assigned by ICAR to a single certified manufacturer only.
Example: ICAR has assigned 991 as the exclusive manufacturer code for AnyVet Microchip.
Examples:
When searching with the shared manufacturer code (900), you will find multiple manufacturers using the same code.
When searching with the non-shared manufacturer code (991) of AnyVet Microchip, you will see only one manufacturer listed.

6. Search by Product Code: This code is assigned by ICAR to each certified product.
You can find it on the product’s official certificate.
If you don’t have that, you can try searching using the first 6 digits of the microchip number.

Example: Searching for Product Code 991003 (used by AnyVet Microchip)

If the manufacturer’s name appears in the ICAR listing, it confirms that the microchip is officially ICAR-certified.
📌 Pro Tip: What to Look For on the Microchip Package

The Manufacturer Code (first 3 digits)
